Sri Purusottam Gaudiya Math Puri

Sri Purushottam Gaudiya Math Puri was inaugurated at Bhakti Kutir by Srila Prabhupada Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur in 1922. On the auspicious day of  11th May, 1929 Srila Prabhupada brought the deity of Mayapur Chandra from Mayapur to Jagannath Puri.

The deity was then put to ‘Jalavihar’ at Narendra Sarovar. A huge crowd admired the beauty of Mayapur Chandra and offered their obeisances. Srila Prabhupada gave a lecture on ‘Sri Krishna Anusandhan’. Many dignitaries attended it.  Along with the deity of Mayapur Chandra, a Deity of Sri Gauranga was established by Srila Prabhupada.

Sri Purushottam Gaudiya Math Puri was shifted to Chatak Parbat on 29th July, 1936. Sri Radha Vinod Madhav Ji were endowed with life at this new location. Sri Chaitanya Gaudiya Math Puri

Sri Chaitanya Gaudiya Math Puri

Chaitanya Gaudiya Math Puri stands on the place where Srila Prabhupada Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur was born. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur made it his place of residence between 1870-1874. At this time, he was serving as the Deputy Collector and Magistrate. Srila Prabhupada was six months old when the annual Rath Yatra festival in Puri was held.

Lord Jagannath made his will known to the world by stopping his cart at the door of his house for three days. The cart stood there motionless. As a result, Bhaktivinoda Thakur organised magnificent kirtan ceremonies to be performed in front of it. The six-month old boy was brought to take darshana of the Deities. He held on to Lord Jagannath’s foot. A garland from Jagannath’s neck fell on him. He also took the first solid food of his lifetime in the form of Jagannath prasada.

After fulfilling the hankering of his devotee, Lord Jagannath finally allowed his cart to proceed. Thus, everyone present could predict the contribution Srila Prabhupada was going to have in spreading the Lord’s Holy Names.

His Grace Bhakti Dayita Madhava Goswami Maharaj reclaimed this house in 1974. He named it Chaitanya Gaudiya Math Puri. The Math is located on Grand Road. This allows the devotees to take daily darshan of Lord Jagannath in Sri Mandir. The Math’s location also serves as a focal point during the rath yatra processions every year.

The Math has Deities of Sri Sri Guru Gauranga Radha Nayanmani, Sri Sri Baladeva-Jagannath Deva-Subhadra Devi and Sudarshan. In addition, it has Deities of the Four Acharyas of four sampradayas and of Srila Prabhupada.

Both rooms and prasada are available at the Math premises all year round. Also, special arrangements are made for Kartik month.

Sri Nilachal Gaudiya Math Puri

Srila Bhaktivedanta Vaman Goswami Maharaj established Nilachal Gaudiya Math Puri in 1978. It is also part of Sri Gaudiya Vedanta Samiti. The idea for a math at that location originated from the wishes of Bhakti Prajnan Keshav Maharaj. These wishes were carried out by his disciple.

Srila Bhaktivedanta Vaman Goswami Maharaj has been likened to a dictionary of slokas due to his profound knowledge of the scriptures. He had the capacity to recite any sloka from memory that would perfectly suit the point being discussed. Once while preaching in Assam, a group of dissenters challenged him and his gurudeva to provide scriptural proof that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is an incarnation of Sri Krishna. On the instruction of his gurudeva, he incessantly recited 50 slokas from different scriptures to lay down the proof. The dissenters were  thoroughly defeated and ashamed.

Nilachal Gaudiya Math Puri is located on Gourbatsahi in Swargadwar. Its closeness to the samadhi of Haridas Thakur amplifies the Holy Names and the spiritual environment engulfing the math. The devotees have the twin benefit of being near to the Puri beach as well as the major sites as a vaishnava.

The Deities in the temple are Sri Sri Guru Gauranga Radha – Vinod Bihari Ji and Sri Sri Jagannath Deva. In addition to the beautiful temple, the math serves plenty of cows in its Goshala.

He preached the message of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu fluently in Hindi, Sanskrit, Bengali and English. Moreover, Srila Prabhupada held his Sanskrit composition in very high regard, and a testament to this, had him sing Sri Rupa Manjari Pada at the time of his departure from this mortal world.

Damodar Gaudiya Math Puri was established in Jagannath Puri in 2009 by Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayan Goswami Maharaj. He arrived at Damodar gaudiya math Puri on November 30th, 2009.

One of Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayan Goswami Maharaj’s great contributions to the spreading of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s message is the translation of Bhaktivinoda Thakur’s prominent works from Bengali to Hindi. The list of books translated by him include Jaiva Dharma, Caitanya-siksamrta, Bhakti-tattva-viveka, Vaishnava-siddhanta-mala and many others.

This allowed people from North India to taste the nectarean message of these timeless books. It also helped people not familiar with either Bengali or English to finally grasp the Gaudiya vaishnava philosophy and spread it among their Hindi-speaking peers. He ended his earthly pastimes in Jagannath Puri on the premises of the Math on 29th December, 2010. To read more about his pastimes click here.

The Math is located on Puri Beach, Odisha at Chakra-tirtha. Its proximity to the ocean where Mahaprabhu performed various pastimes allows devotees to meditate on those pastimes and submerge themselves fully into the Holy Names. Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayan Goswami Maharaj deeply revered the great Ocean on the shores of Puri and bathed in the water carried from the ocean during his stay in Jagannath Puri.

Damodar Gaudiya Math Puri adornes beautiful deities of Thakurji, Sri Jagannath, Baladeva and Subhadra. Also, it has many rooms for those looking to stay close to the Puri Beach in peace. Srila Bhakti Vaibhava Puri Maharaj took Sannyasa in 1966, after three decades of unflinching service to the mission of his Gurudeva, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur Goswami Prabhupada. In 1966 itself, he formed Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mission in Andhra Pradesh and later shifted the headquarters to Jagannath Puri. Since then, the mission has expanded to over 20 different centres around the world. Several books have been published in Oriya, English and other languages. Foremost among them is a translation of Sri Chaitanya Bhagavata.

Chaitanya Chandra Math Puri is right next to Gundicha Temple. Furthermore, the math is located in Ai Tota gardens, the place where Mahaprabhu showed his mercy to King Prataparudra. During the rath yatra procession, Mahaprabhu was overcome with ecstasy and almost fell down. King Prataparudra came forth to hold him, which displeased Mahaprabhu as he had instructed his disciples to make sure that no worldly-minded person touches him. However, the King approached Mahaprabhu again and offered him a recitation of Gopi-gita from Srimad Bhagavatam. Mahaprabhu embraced him and showered his blessing on him. CHaitanya Chandra Math Puri stands at this holy site.
